Food Energetics for Dogs and Cats
Understanding Cooling, Warming, and Neutral Proteins Through Traditional Wisdom and Modern Science
Most pet parents focus on ingredients, protein levels, and calories when selecting foods and treats for their dogs and cats. However, another nutritional concept that has existed for centuries is becoming increasingly discussed in both holistic and integrative veterinary nutrition: food energetics.
Food energetics refers to how certain foods may influence the body beyond basic nutrition. In traditional Eastern food philosophy, foods are often categorized as cooling, warming, or neutral based on their perceived effects on balance within the body.
Interestingly, modern science also recognizes that foods can affect inflammation, circulation, metabolism, digestion, hydration, and immune function differently depending on nutrient composition, amino acid profiles, fat levels, and bioactive compounds.

Cooling Proteins
Cooling proteins are often associated with hydration, calming effects, and support for inflammatory conditions.
Examples include:

• Minnows
Cooling proteins are often selected for pets that may struggle with:
• Itchy skin
• Hot spots
• Excessive panting
• Redness or irritation
• Overheating
• Seasonal inflammation
From a modern scientific perspective, many cooling proteins contain beneficial fatty acids and anti inflammatory nutrients that may support skin barrier health and immune modulation. Fish based proteins, for example, are rich in omega 3 fatty acids that have been widely studied for their role in reducing inflammatory responses.

Warming Proteins
Warming proteins are thought to support circulation, energy production, and metabolism.

• Lamb
Warming proteins are often used for pets that appear:

• Less active
• Sensitive to cold weather
• Aging or slowing down physically
Modern nutrition science supports the idea that higher protein foods and organ meats may increase thermogenesis, which is the body’s production of heat during digestion and metabolism. Organ meats are also naturally rich in iron, B vitamins, taurine, CoQ10, zinc, and amino acids that support cellular energy production and muscle maintenance.

Neutral Proteins
Neutral proteins are considered balanced and are often used as the nutritional foundation for many pets.
Examples include:
• Turkey
• Pork
Neutral proteins are often well tolerated and suitable for rotational feeding approaches because they are neither strongly warming nor strongly cooling.
Scientifically, many neutral proteins provide highly digestible amino acids and balanced nutrient profiles, making them appropriate for long term feeding in many healthy dogs and cats.
Why Food Energetics May Matter
Every dog and cat is biologically unique. Age, breed, activity level, environment, stress, climate, and health status all influence nutritional needs.
For example:
• A highly active dog during winter may benefit from more warming proteins and calorie dense treats.
• A dog with skin irritation during hot summer months may respond better to cooling proteins.
• Senior pets may require balanced protein rotation to support muscle maintenance while minimizing inflammatory stress.
Modern veterinary nutrition increasingly recognizes the importance of individualized feeding rather than relying entirely on one universal diet approach.
Freeze Dried Foods and Modern Nutrition
Freeze dried foods provide an interesting bridge between traditional food energetics and modern nutritional science.
Because freeze drying removes moisture using very low temperatures, many nutrients remain more structurally intact compared to high heat processing methods. This includes:
